Mental Health Awareness Week -  Resources and Finding Support

We recently launched a survey called ‘Your Voice. Your Support’, asking participants to give their open and honest views on our services and where support may be missing or more needed in order to help direct our 3–5 year strategy. We were absolutely thrilled to have received 139 responses and have since held an in-person and online workshop to dive deeper into the key insights of the survey.

One key insight that came as no surprise to us was the need for emotional support as a top priority.

Whilst we’re working hard to develop our support services, we've put together some trusted resources that may help offer supplementary support in the meantime. Please note any personal views and opinions of external bodies are their own and do not reflect those of Keeping Abreast.

Read

If you prefer to digest information in your own time, here are a few trusted articles around mental health and breast cancer. Future Dreams and Breast Cancer Now are fantastic trusted resources and cover topics around coping with cancer emotionally, breathing techniques, triggers, friendships after cancer and more.

Listen

If reading isn't for you, then why not listen to some podcasts? Listening to others telling their story can be reassuring to hear and may help you through your own journey. The Breast Cancer Now podcast hosted by Laura Price, writer, podcaster and author of novel Single Bald Female, talks to a variety of guests with personal or professional experience of breast cancer. The conversations are open, supportive and honest. Or if audiobooks are more your thing, try The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer: How to Feel Empowered and Take Control by Professor Trisha Greenhalgh and Dr Liz O’Riordan. Finally, if you're looking for some mindfulness and meditation, Calm has a series of podcasts on stress & anxiety, sleep and more, available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Watch

As well as our monthly free online mindfulness sessions, we also have a series of free half-hour Mindfulness For All sessions which have been put together by Nerissa and kindly funded by Art For Cure. These videos are aimed at providing a moment of calm, taking you through a guided session of mindfulness and breathing exercises.

If you are struggling with your mental health following a breast cancer diagnosis, please know there is plenty of support out there. Our Support Helpline is open Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm on 01603 819113, where our friendly team can recommend trusted support services from counselling to support groups and beyond, all personalised to you. Alternatively, for more urgent support in evenings or weekends, we recommend the following charities:

Mind – for support and information online or over-the-phone helpline support.

Samaritans – for urgent 24hr support and crisis management.
