About our group

Our face-to-face support meetings, held in Cheltenham, are informal, relaxed and open to those who wish to gain more information about breast reconstruction as an immediate procedure after a diagnosis of breast cancer or due to a hereditary risk. Alternatively, it may be that you are considering breast reconstruction after a previous mastectomy.

The face-to-face meetings provide the opportunity to meet and talk with other women who are considering, undergoing or post-reconstruction. Family and friends are very welcome plus there are always refreshments and often a speaker and a raffle.

For the last couple of years, one of our volunteers, Jacky, has been speaking about her experiences regarding her own breast reconstruction to WI groups around the South West.  Here are some comments from a recent visit:

“I don’t need tell you how very much your talk was enjoyed by all, it will certainly interest other WIs. It opened our eyes to so much about Breast Cancer, things we could never have known had you not agreed to visit us.I hope the success of your visit to us will give you the confidence to repeat your presentation at other groups, although you have such a strong message to give, and you do it with such humour and knowledge, that it’s difficult to believe you could have been nervous.”

Keeping Abreast South West
Support through your journey from mastectomy to breast reconstruction

KASW is NOT about having reconstruction…but IT IS about giving you information to make an informed decision.

As you can imagine, this is more of a draft than usual as we cannot be sure what is going to happen over the winter and into next year. However, this is our plan and we will follow it as closely as we can – government guidelines permitting! We will always try to let Keeping Abreast HQ know of any changes to the programme so that they can advertise these on the website, so do remember to check back here for updates.

Want to help?

As a small group, we are always on the look-out for volunteers to join us to help run the group so we can offer support to more women considering and undergoing breast reconstruction.  Ideally, we are looking for some previous reconstruction patients who would be willing to talk to others about their journey, and also some individuals to help with the administrative side of things too. If you might be interested, please contact us at Keeping Abreast HQ at: on 01603 819113. Thank you.

Nick of Time:

As well as supporting women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and looking to have an immediate or delayed reconstruction, Keeping Abreast also supports those women looking to have elective reconstruction surgery due to the discovery of a breast cancer gene.

This support is provided by our sister group ‘Nick of Time’. It is likely that there will be elective surgery patients at your local group, but if you would like specific information or further details please contact Nick of Time.
